Why won't my guitar's distortion pedal work?

I got a distortion pedal for my guitar for Christmas. But when I hook it up, my amp just makes a loud buzzing sound. I have a 15G amp and the pedal says DS-1 BOSS so idk what's wrong. Both cables I use to hook up the amp, pedal and guitar are brand new and when the pedal isn't hooked up the amp works fine. Is it because my amp doesn't have enough power or something?
