Why won't my Ford 390 start?

I have a 1970 Ford truck with a 390 V8. New distributor. new coil. set dist to #1. direct wired coil to battery. using starting fluid. cranking engine does not even get a chug or backfire. getting fire to plugs verified with inline plug-check light at the plug wire and at the coil wire. took off the valve cover. all valves are moving. distributer is turning. its not a broken cam.
yes I have put the #1 cylinder to TDC...twice now.
yeah i know about the piston coming up twice. I've tried one way then 180 out. points and codenser are brand new. but i've gotten bad new parts before. I'm in process of getting new points and condenser.
The only way i can answer these questions is the add details under the edit click of my original post. if there is another way to answer within the thread please let me know.
the truck ran fine. then someone tried to steal it and cut all the ignition wires and blew up the mallory coil. at $300 to change that we just went back to new, stock distributor and coil. running power strait to coil and have a remote starer button so I can crank the engine and adjust the dist at the same time. priming it with gas and ether. not even a pop. trying new points and condenser.....
