Why won't my computer recognize my HTC Hero?

I got my friend's old HTC Hero for Sprint. I downloaded HTC Sync as well as the update for the Hero. When I plug in the usb cable in the computer and connect it to my phone. I get a notification on my computer saying the USB is not recognized. What do I need to do?

I have USB debugging on and I switch the connection to HTC SYnc. I have Windows 7 on my computer.
