It's a 1985 Chevy S10. The brake lights will come on when the headlights are on, and the blinkers work fine, but when I hit the brake pedal the lights don't come on at all. I tried checking the fuse box, but I have no idea which one is for the tail lights, and I don't know how to go about checking the switch.

I'm certain you dont have a fuse problem as most light systems feed off the one fuse so you would have many lights not working. It could be the bulbs in your tailights. The bulbs serve a dual lighting function, in other words they have two elements in a single bulb.. If this is the case it is a very cheap fix. Remove them and replace them with 2 new bulbs.

the switch is at the top of the metal bracket that is connected to the brake peddle but I would check the bulbs first

It could be the switch under the break pedal. they go bad from time to time. It is a fairly easy fix and does not cost that much.
