why won't my car accelerate from a stop?

It is a 1997 honda civic with an automatic transmission.
When it gets going it drives fine, but when I am at a stop and hit the gas, I really have to push down to get it into first gear. When I am on a hill, it keeps rolling backwards until I really push the gas even on a small hill. I hate to do this to my car. I figure the transmission is bad, but is there any way I can drive it a little more safely, such as pumping the gas or driving it under D2? Is this the sign of something else other than the transmission? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.
