Why won't Facebook chat won't let me go online?

I keep clicking on the little thing, but it will pop up, say "Chat (0)" and then close back up. Occassionally the number will change to show how many is actually online, but other than that, it doesn't show my friends- just blank white space; it won't let me go online & it keeps closing up and saying "Chat (Offline). What is the problem & how can I make it stop.

By the way I have different friend groups, & I have it to where some know I'm online & others don't; just wanted to put that out there in case that's contributing to the problem.
Ahh, I put won't in my question twice. That was smart. . . :P
 
It might be because facebook is being incredibly dumb (like most of the time). Usually signing off facebook and signing back in does the trck.
Unless, you don't have any friends, or any facebook friends... which is a whole different problem altogether.
