Why wont Call of Duty 4 connect to XBox Live on the first try.?

every time i start up COD: 4 and go directly to multiplayer the XBox Live wont connect, so i go to test connection and everything connects and works fine. so then i go back to Call of Duty and it works. 90% of the time it will do this, and it only started since the most recent update.
