Why won't 78 Jeep Cherokee pump fuel after replacing fuel pump?

We have a 1978 Jeep Cherokee with a 360 4bbl. It wouldn't start and after checking the basics such as fuel filter we discovered the fuel pump was bad. We replaced the fuel pump and can feel it pushing air when we put our finger over the fuel line but can't get any gas to flow. What are we doing wrong?
 
Several suggestions, Clogged or dirty pick-up in the gas tank. Kink or pin hole in the feed line from fuel tank to pump. Not positioning the fuel pumps arm properly on the crank shaft.
