...near future? Friends,
Check the following facts:
1. In the 1980's an average of 26.5 test matches were played per year
2. In the 1990's an average of 34.6 test matches were played per year
3. In this decade an average of 41.2 test matches were played per year
However, the golden age seems to be the first half of this decade when an average of 50.6 matches were played.
The onset of T20s cause a decrease in the number of matches with only 41.2 being played in the second half of this decade. The dip was sharpest when T20 was introduced with only 31 matches being played in 2007.
1. Do you feel that the number of test matches will decline in the future or will the plateau at an average of ~40/year (the graph shows a downward trend from 2000 though)? What do you reckon will be the average in the coming decade?
2. Do you feel that Tendulkar and Muralis world records will ever be beaten ? Consider a) the number of matches you think will be played in the future as compared with those in the late 90s and early 20s when Murali and Tendulkar were at their peak b) present and past state of cometitiveness in cricket 3) Influence of bench strength etc. among other factors.
Will look forward to both positive and negative opinions.
Thanks
Rehman of Multan
EDIT:
Consider also the following graphs:
1. All of Tendulkars Double centuries came only after the later half of the last decade, making him one of the most prolific scorers when most test matches were being played ever :

2. You will notice a very similar trend in Muralis bowling graph:
