do we start with the gender, or at least I do and I know millions of other people who do also. 'Well I was talking to this man/woman/girl/boy' 'This man told me' Why is mentioning the persons gender in the first line so important??
But generally you wouldnt start with with 'I was talking to somebody the other day' or people think you are being discreet, or trying to hide something with purpose.
I disagree with men and women not being the same, at least the people I know unless regarding reproductive type gender topics that are inescapable. But with a huge range of topics, gender really doesnt, or shouldnt play a part.
