WHY WHEN I FIND A NEW GUNS IN BATTLE FIELD 2 IT SAYS UNLOCKED?

OK i got the game Battle Field 2 but i dont understand stand the point of every time you get to a new mission theres a new gun to find and then when you pick it up and it shows up on the screen saying new weapon unlock ? whats the purpose of this ? is it like for when you play the game again you can play with any weapon of your choice or something ?
