why were the winds so light?

I was ahead of a warm front/ occluded front the winds were very brisk out of the east at 25-35 mph and gusty it was cool and cloudy. A line of storms was moving in from tshe southwest. The winds seemed to gradually decrease as the storms moved in. As the storms moved in there was no gust front, i saw low clouds moving towards the storm from the east into the storm. then the rain and thunder began and the winds were light east. why didnt the winds shift to the southwest and why was there a decrease in wind from the east during the storm? im confused
