...steam engines be used? My husband is always talking about using steam for energy instead of fuel in a car. Would that be feasible?
 
Steam doesn't come from nowhere. Some sort of fuel needs to be burned to heat the water to make steam. In fact, that's how most (coal, gas, oil, nuclear) power plants work. It doesn't make much sense for a car because you still need to carry a bunch of fuel around in addition to the large and cumbersome steam generator.
 
no because it would be a pain in a the butt. Steam engines tend to be a lot heavier and be less powerful than the gasoline engines.
