Why were primitive civilizations so fixated with magic/the supernatural?

I mean, the Aztecs, Incas, Abrahamic faiths, Polytheism in general.... vampires, witches, demons, gods, angels were so commonplace! Every civilization had a full array of supernatural beings! Is our thinking today merely evolved? But there were geniuses in ancient times too... brilliant thinkers... I mean lots of ancient philosophoes and ideas are still studied today! So why this seemingly illogical fixation with the supernatural? Nowadays, people who believe in miracles are almost laughed at- miracles seem so stupid, just fantasy and wishful thinking! But they seem to have occured lots of times in ancient history!!! Does anyone else see a discrepancy here?

Supernatural beliefs are really just failed sciences. People seek explanations for things they do not understand, however these people did not have the scientific method, so imagination and some unfortunate side effects of our psychology fill the void.
There were geniuses in those days and many of them abandoned supernatural belief, like the great greek philosophers, who really pioneered the scientific method, by the time of aristotle and his kind the pagan gods had largely fallen out of fashion and into obscurity.
