Does john 8:39-58 mean that Jesus saw Abraham?
The response of the Jews in vs 57 is why I am wondering if Jesus was understood as saying that he saw Abraham (and that Abraham saw him, in person):
John 8:39 They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham.
40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.
...
John 8:56 Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.
57 So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"
58 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."
In vs 57 why were Jesus' words in verse 56 understood by them that Jesus was saying that he saw Abraham? Why in vs. 58 does Jesus seem to be affirming that they understood his words correctly?
