Was it because he contradicted what the bible said, or what ?

Thx, any help much appreciated =D

No, he contradicted what the church said. AFAIK there's nothing in the bible about planetary orbits.

The church tried to promote many 'facts' which didn't have a basis in science, or even in the bible, and regarded it as a sin to even question such dogma. It was the ultimate system of unaccountability.

When Galileo tried to point out their mistake, it was a major threat to their way of thought as they could not permit their beliefs being challenged.

If they could be shown to be wrong about that, then maybe people would question their interpretation of the bible. They may even want to be able to read the bible themselves, and before long they'd be questioning things like paying money to pray for souls in purgatory or the selling of indulgences, as those were not in the bible. If people wouldn't pay for indulgences or lost souls, then a major revenue stream would be cut off.

Furthermore if people didn't believe what the church told them, then maybe another church would spring up to challenge their version of beliefs, and possibly even people would stop believing in all this stuff altogether.

Hmm...

Edit:
To be fair, the Roman Catholic church did finally accept that Galileo was right, and the earth is not stationary... in 1992.

Yes, that's it! The bible was written by hundreds of ignorant and unintelligent men over hundreds of years. They had no knowledge or idea of science.

Galileo had to be very careful, because he could have been hanged for being blasphemous and he could never declare that there wasn't a god or heaven or hell and he knew that the church was teaching a load of rubbish and lies.

The church has had power over people for thousands of years and wants to keep it that way.

Galileo, like most intelligent and educated people, including Darwin, know that the bible and religion and god are just smokescreens for the truth.

There are 2 main points. 1st: His ideas challanged the church's athority to answer ?'s of "Heaven" (Stary nights). regardless of ? or answer, it was (in the church's)in there way of thinking a direct threat to there athority.
2nd. It should ne clear/////;they held "On highest authority" that the Earth was the center of the Heavens and so Galileo's ideas and answer not only contadicted the church ---it contracted God!!

Galileo was not a very likable guy.

Never underestimate the power of charisma. Galileo didn't have any. Smarts, he had... charisma, not so much.

Remember, Copernicus came out with a theory that basically said "Nyah, nyah! All you guys are wrong!" But he never got in trouble for it. (his Uncle was a Bishop and he himself was a canon (think priest, sorta). Even some of Copernicus' supporters of the theory were inside the Church.

So, why the big diff?

Galileo was a bit of a jerk.

Take this as a lesson... cultivate your friendships and when you drop a big bomb on society... do it sneaky.

The Catholic Church was vey much into pscyhologically manipulating the masses in order to forcibly convert many people to Christianity for centures. The Spansih Inquisition, i.e,. the Catholic Curch, used torture to get people to confess. Galileo was educated. Being educated and having intelligence were reserved to the Catholic Church, supposedly. It's kind of ironic that the Vatican is the major partner of one Kitt Peak's or Mount Graham's larger telescopes for over 10 years.
