Seeing a discovery channel documentary on the battle of the 300 and the war surrounding it, apparently because Sparta put up such resistance, it eventually ceased the spread of the Persian empire. They gave them credit for saving the idea of a democratic government that some Greek city-states used. Without democracy, the world would be a much different place in many facets of life such as politically, technologically, with class systems, etc.
