Around the 400s AD, the first Christian monastic community, referred to later by historians as "The Desert Fathers" built their cells on cliffs near a marsh and desert in Egypt.
Although looked upon and revered as ethical men, the community wielded no political power nor aggrandized themselves in the manner of later monastic communities in Medieval Europe.
