Why was queer activism in the 60s and 70s more upfront than it is now?

In those days people picketted and fought like crazy to get their rights. I'm talking about streets lined up with angry mobs demanding for their voice to be heard. Everytime when there was some right winger trying to pry away gay people's rights there would be some activist in the news directing the crowd anger. The public from the living rooms would notice the indignant anger being generated from all the injustice and would come to an understanding that we wanted to be treated as equals.

Now its like the queer activists have disappeared. I don't see those Malcom X types who say "enough is enough." There is no strong queer leadership like Harvey Milk. Queers are still being discriminated against in the military. Queers cannot be reocgnized as marriage partners under the law and cannot have access to the same benefits as heterosexual couples enjoy. Queers cannot be seen in public with their partners if they want to run for public office. Is it just me? But have the queer activists gone into hiding pretending that our rights no longer existed?
