We just purchased a small tank for our daughter a lil mermaid 1.5 gallon/ whisper quiet filter tank, the fish died in two days....I have had a betta fishbefore and she lived for three years in a regular bowl which I cleaned every two days, so my questionis why did this fish not survive????
here are the steps we took, please find my mistake OR rec. a better fish for this small tank

we brought betta home in his petco container

I cleaned the tank with warm water, i set up the clean gravel and added one small plant and mermaid statue, rinsed filter and inserted in its spot and placed it on top left of tank with about 1 inch of space from gravel, place filter pump above tank about 9 " up for flow ( we were planning on buying the converter this sunday) added water and added a teaspoon of water cleaner, added fish with the water he was in. gave a lil food, went to bed, thursday morning the water was all murky, we took fish out and re cleaned tank and replaced filter, added fish again and gave the fish food and fish seeme okay, it was moving well and ate when food was given, thursday night noticed it kept going behind the filter, it justed wanted to stay hidden, i thought i might of gotten trap between the hose and filter so i wiggled it out. betta swam away, friday woke up gave it a pinch of food, and it went behind the filter again..water was clear and i didnt understand why it kept hiding behind filter, i thought id buy it a house to hide in.... 4:30 pm we go check on fish she isnt moving much but is sitting on the bottom of tank and wiggling a little...5:30 pm dead fish...really, really dead fish wouldnt move at all no mouth movement of any kind. So My daughter is 3 yrs old and we told her that :Pinball" ( yes she named the betta is going to transform and its hiding in the gravel to re-grow...(shes 3, she will have many disappointments in the future let this not be one of then) well how can i make sure that the next fish we get has a higher rate of survuval??? what did we do wrong?? we were thinking of getting a small clown fish or angel fish to replace the betta...maybe bettas dont like filters??? I have no clue..SO PLEASE HELP ME I NEED TO GO SNEAK OUT AND BUY FISH IN THE MORNING!!!!

I not an expert but did you check the ph of the water and was it dechlorinated. Are you using hard water or soft water? the water should be filtered before hand because I doubt if fish tank filters are that good . And make sure you clean the filter first because if it has charcoal that would go into the water right off.
