Why was my cat so sick?

Exactly one week ago we had to put down my baby girl cat. She wasn't even 1. It started a few days before we took her to the emergency vet. She was only acting a little weird, extra lazy, not herself, and a little bit off balance. We were alarmed, but not too much. We just thought she wasn't feeling good. We all have those days.
The next day, she refused to move from the place she was sleeping and she could barely stand up she was so weak. She ate and drank when we brought her food and water, but we never once saw her get up to go to the bathroom and she wouldn't go when we put her in the litter box. Her tummy stayed its usual soft and mushy state though which was weird. She wouldn't respond to you, wouldn't look at you, she had no reaction. She was like a rag doll. You could literally do anything to her and she'd barely respond.
The next day we took her to the emergency vet. She wasn't doing well at all. Before we left she had trouble breathing, but we managed to calm her down and right as we got there, she was having such a hard time breathing. They took her to the back and put her on oxygen. She laid there with it down her throat, no sedation, nothing. Just laid there.
We could have done blood tests and found out what exactly was wrong, but the vet told us that she was really, really sick. For what the blood tests cost, it might not have been worth it. She didn't know what she had, but she told us that it probably wasn't poisoning considering she never threw up. We asked her opinion and what she would do if she was in our place and she said that she was so sick and so young that no matter what she had, she might not have bounced back from it. There wasn't even a 50-50 percent chance.
So we put her down. This past week though, it has absolutely killed me not knowing what was wrong. I didn't want to put her down, but I didn't want her to live her life in pain. I didn't want my parents spending all this money when there was a high chance that it wouldn't have been worth it. She was such a special cat. And she changed so much in a matter of days.
The vet kept telling us she was so sick. So sick. But what was it? It's been the question that's been haunting me all week. What was it? And could we have saved her? Would she have lived her life in pain? Was something just wrong with her mentally? Did we do the right thing?
If anybody has any idea as to what it might have been, it would mean so much to me. Just to know. I hate not knowing.
