Why was it offensive to have sculptures of living things in the middle ages?

So I was watching something on the History channel and the narrator mentioned something about how europeans in the middle ages had destroyed some old sculptures/artwork because they depicted living things (horses, people, etc. in this specific case) becuase they were offensive. I was wondering if anyone knew why europeans during medieval times had the belief that having sculptures of living things was offensive.
Thanks to anyone who knows! :)
