Why was I so tired and winded during today's conditioning camp?

I haven't been on the ice since the end of June, which is just over 6 weeks. I have been training all summer, focusing especially on strength, however I have added in some cardio (2-3 times per week.) Last summer I didn't do as much training and I don't remember sucking so much wind after an ice session. The drills were very intense with lots of skating, but this is no excuse. I should be feeling like I am in the best shape of my life. Why was I so tired and winded during the skate? I felt like I had horrible stamina? Does it take a skate or two to get your legs back despite training? I also had new skates so i'm not sure if that affected it.
