Why was greek mythlogy important to the greek civilization?

In history Greek civilization is 1 among the oldest.Naturally greeks deserve to be proud for it. No wonder one feels proud of his own ancestors creations. but u see, it is common to all the countries.
 
All cultures were influenced by their religious beliefs (mythology).
These stories helped them to understand why things happened in the absence of scientific research (such as floods, earthquakes, eclipses, etc.) how and why their people came into being, why their tribes differ, and what was expected of them by the gods (social mores and societal norms).
