I understand the fact that there are deadbeat dads, but I KNOW there are also mom's that do not do what's right for her kids and tries to "stick it" to the dad.
A man that I know loves his son very much and he has been paying support (and medical, child care when the child was younger, clothes, food, etc. - whatever is needed) since divorce. The father has also been seeing a lot of the son throughout the years. The son is 18 now and earned his general High School diploma and is and has been working outside the home 40+ hours per week but under the table. The son has been getting into a lot of problems, legally and socially. The mother fails to support the child financially since the father's been providing heat for the son during winter, paying for his rides to work and paying for food as the son claims there is no food in the house. Although the mother's been making pretty good money and marrying into money (several times), she is very selfish when it comes to giving her son financial, mental, and emotional support (she goes out and drinks frequently). She has finally succeeded in turning the son against the father and now, she's trying to take the father to court for extended payment of support until the son is 21.
I don't know the law in the state of NY, but I thought the father is no longer obligated to pay support once the child is 18 and supports himself (works) full time and doesn't attend school??? Does the father have a case? BTW, dad is not trying to get out of paying support, he would rather pay the son the money. The mother has been drinking her money away and frequently goes in for a plastic surgery. In the meantime, the son has 2 pairs of jeans, no food so he buys his own, always broke even though he works, and looks very unhealthy.
The son sticks up for his mother and treats his father badly. To the son, living with his father isn't what the mother wants so he would NEVER "betray" her. The mother is money/image oriented. She has emotionally and mentally drained the son but the son doesn't see it. The son is very abusive towards other women but not to his mother. The mother has all the energy (and the money) to fight the dad in court. It's really sad because the son is, ultimately paying for what the dad has been fighting for years to protect his son from.
I never thought I'd see it but the mom really is out for only herself. Her past proves this (she has another child from her previous relationship) and her relationship with her family (or lack of) and other men (with money).
