While I don't like the BCS, aI am not sold on a playoff and here is why.
A playoff determines the team that wins a tournament. In football and March Madness for that matter, one loss and you are done for. So if a lower seed has a great day against a higher seed then that means the lower seed team was great for at least one day only. That doesn't mean if the two teams played again the lower seed team would play as great the second time.
So a single elimination playoff doesn't always determine who is the best team in the country in any sport.
So given the very cruel nature of the BCS and the anything can happen nature of a tournament, what is the compromise between a BCS system and a playoff system if the goal is to have the two best teams play for the title?
