why should you not beat your dog if it was possessed of a djin (devil)?

our holy book tell us that if any of our chattels such as our dog, goat or wife disobey our will then they should be beaten until the devils leave them. it is responsible act of mercy and a great kindness of their owner to do this and restore them to obedience.
why cant the kaffirs see the sense of this merciful act?
