Why panasonic photo files are much bigger than canon's or nikon's?

*Calling for camera experts out there* I have a Panasonic lumix FX30 (7 megapixels) and I notice that the photos I took with this camera are between 2.5-3.5 MB. However, my friends with their nikon and canon with higher megapixels (each 10 and 14 megapixels respectively), no matter whether flash is used or not, night or day, they always have their photos not bigger than 1 MB.
ps. we used the maximum megapixel available of those cameras and we compared the pictures with the same object/light/mode.

I'm so confused why panasonic makes bigger photo size. And I don't think my camera captures better pictures than theirs, though. Thank you for your help!
