Is it possible that the reason that there is not RTPi on BEV is because they are insisting that RTP no longer allows a FTA version for NORTH AMERICA???

DISH does not seem to have a problem with RTP offering FTA. Of course DISH only charges $4 for RTPi:confused:

Anyone know why Belltv isn't offering any Portuguese language channels? The Rtpi feed should be readily available and has been approved by the CRTC. Rogers carries rtpi, globo (brazil) and record (brazil) .. and fptv, a completely useless wannabe portuguese channel produced in Toronto (probably with some Rogers involvement).

Bell has now even dropped the superliga soccer package which was on channel 403 before. Not that I'd ever pay $250 or whatever it was to subscribe to a channel that showed 3 games on the weekend and no other programming whatsoever; it was the biggest rip job ever!

But what the hey? do i have to point my 92 dish to 61.5 and pick up rtpi on dishnetwork through means that need not be mentioned?

I feel a little discriminated against.

I complained to bell about this for years.. No one ever seamed to care. Seams like they think they cant make money of Portuguese channels.. But apparently they can off every other Ethnic package. Only way to get RTP or any Portuguese channels is Grey Market dish, Rogers, or True FTA on AMC 4 your able to get RTP.. but you need a receiver per tv.. this annoys me a lot because im stuck watching RTP only on 1 television because i refuse to buy 5 FTA receivers for 1 channel.

Bell TV also doesn't carry any Spanish language channel...

The explanation that was once given to me as to why they have so many Indian channels for example, and they do no carry any Spanish language channel, was that lots of Latinos and Portugese decide to buy DISH or DIRECT TV from USA to get the channel they want

Ther is lots of Portugese and Latinos in Canada, yes, but Bell TV doesn't have a large Portugese and Latino clientele. If they were to offer some channels for them they will probably get more of them, but it be enought to say it's worth it?

Take a walk in the Latin area of Montreal, around metro Jean-Talon or Beaubien and see how many DISH you will see, compare to how many Bell TV

Hey Ex Agent EV,

Thanks for the explanation, that makes it more clear then simply saying 'they can't make any money off them'. I can see why Latinos would look south of the border for spanish TV as there are no providers here in Canada who carry any Spanish channels (aside from Videotron who has a few). Regarding Portuguese, since Videotron only carries 1 channel and satellite has none then I see why they look south of the border to get what they want. Viewers in Ontario have Rogers as an option but those who live in other areas or provinces have no options for Portuguese TV except for south of the border.

Based on what you mentioned, I guess the only new internationals we may see Bell add are more Indian channels. These South Asian channels must be quite profitable, Dish in the US now has over 20 channels and continue to add more.

I hate to tell you this but if Bell TV ever carry RTP, you will "Need a Receiver (Tuner) for each TV"....

Also one FTA unit can easily supply the same channel to as many tv's in the house as you want either thru a cable splitter or a wireless tv adapter.

It will cost you about 150 bucks total for the FTA unit and the Dish.

As a Bonus on AMC 4 you also get SETANTA sports FTA
Also You get the RDP radio on the same channel as RTP.

Dont pay cable for an FTA station...

why? its not like there expensive these days. because of all the signal piracy going around. im sure if you look in your local classifieds you can get them for 15-50 bucks cause the majority of the people that have an FTA these days think there useless if you cannot pirate tv with them

The Liga Sagres is no longer offered in Canada for residential clients - this was requested by the North American rights holders located in New Jersey. The only Canadians that should have access to the Liga Sagres package would be commercial entities. Many residential clients receive SPT from the US via grey market arrangements, though...

As for RTPi not being offered on Bell TV, from what I've heard, Bell TV does not believe that they could get the necessary subscribership to make it worth their while. It's not for a lack of bandwith, what with Nimiq 4 around. I have a friend who actually works for RTP in Lisbon and he's pretty frustrated by Bell TV's resistance to adding RTPi to their lineup. I also wonder whether or not Bell TV would be able to come close to matching the amount American subscribers pay Dish Network for RTPi, which is currently $4 per month. I would have to say that Canadians would have to pay close to what Rogers subscribers pay, which is $15 per month - a total rip-off considering that the channel could be had for free via AMC4...

I've got family with the grey market fta's and i've seen the SPT channel offered by dish. Its like an American version of FPTV, except it shows all the Portuguese league games. I believe the price dish charges for that channel is like $19.99/month or $220 per year. I would gladly pay that for that one channel if the satellite providers here in Canada would pick up a good channel like that. When are these providers ever going to learn that no one in Canada wants to watch these crappy watered down Canadian versions of American/ethnic programming! Like seriously.. There wouldn't be hardly any grey market systems the CRTC would just let us see what we want. Like HBO, Showtime and what not.. But hey that's another story.

Are you serious? I am paying $15/month for this with bell. Why would they have it FTA?

Sorry to bump this thread, but:

With the recent addition of many channels to Bell's international programming, which now includes channels broadcasting in Russian, Greek, Polish, Italian, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu, Spanish, Punjabi, Urdu, Mandarin, Cantonese and Filipino - Portuguese programming is notably absent.

The above reasoning that Latin Americans typically don't have Bell TV is a circular argument. Did anyone at Bell think that maybe the reason they don't have it is because Bell doesn't offer much to cater to them?

If you build it, they will come. But they won't come if there's nothing there.

We know Brazilians are very passionate about football - I can assure you if Bell had a decent football package alone, that would attract subscribers. Yes, there's GolTV but so far I'm not happy with them. We'd be better off with PFC deal like the rest of the world has. Instead we get just Paulista games dubbed in English or Spanish on GolTV, but seemingly no Brasiliero matches. And all this on a channel that tries to cram in matches from I don't know how many other leagues all on one channel.
Bring us Flamengo, we will buy it.

There are lots of channels free, you just have to know how to get them, this is why 90% of my tv viewing is free on my 10' c/ku dish.

smootherator it's best to keep channels like this on the dl, yes I know it is on lyngsat but the more it's mentioned better chance of it getting encrypted.

Except for the Filipino channel that I wasn't aware of, most of the current internationnal channels were there when I was at Express Vu (left in september 2007), so we cannot really consider it recent addition

For the soccer games (I guess that's what you reffer to when speaking about football) you can see some on TSN. FOX Sports World and, of course, GOL TV! I heard that there is also some games broadcasted on Setanta sports. You can also see a few games on TLN (Variety1). Nothing comparable to whatyou will get using DISH or Direct TV, most of the Latin American league games are not broadcasted on these channels like they are with the other mentionned providers

Thanks for the reply.
I must be losing my mind, I swore I saw a press release a few months ago with a bunch of new international channels being added. Most recent I could find with a search though, was from 2007 with three new stations from Russia.

yeah that true.... but it is no big secret to anyone with a dish aimed at amc4 101.

I hope that channel is here to stay. It is the American Channel and it does show the Premiership games.

RTPi on there will always be free in the clear. Setanta might not be free very long.

I long forgot this tread, but thanks for bringing it up. If you go to west end of Toronto ( Dundas st. West) I'd say a good 85% of people are using dish to watch Portuguese channels. If bell would add Portuguese channels at a competitive price, it would bring over a lot of those people who get it currently from the US. Now is an especially good time to do this because from what I've been told and read there's no more Pirating of dish for internationals as they swapped those to the new Smart Cards. If bell was smart, they'd add RTP and charge say 5 bucks a month for it.. Heck a huge chunk of my family would switch to bell!. My parents want bell but wont switch due to there being no Portuguese channels.

Bell used to get the then called SuperLiga Soccer package and it was exclusive to Expressvu. Last season rogers also got it, and this year no one has it.

Sounds to be like the suits at bell think they can make money off every other Ethnic channel except Portuguese and Spanish.

Plenty of FTA on 97 west Galaxy 25 for a very long time also.

Probably cause they didn't make enought money with it... The Super Liga package was really expensive (329$ I belive). I didn't see too many clients that suscribed to the package, and was often told that it was not a very popular package. I tried to sell it a few times to Portuguese clients and they refused the offer, shocked by the cost
