Why no backpacks allowed, but tote bags are?

In my school, they forbid anyone to use backpacks to carry our books in. But on the other hand, they let girls use tote bags and messenger bags... I carry 4 heavy books, 4 1-inch binders, and my laptop.

Why am I not allowed to use a backpack?

If the reason is smuggling weapons, drugs, or any other contraband, it can be done in those Hollister & American Eagle bags too. I feel I'm getting the raw end of the deal here, it's a lot of work to carry all my AP books, etc.
 
Take it to the Principal. It's wrong that only girls are allowed to carry tote bags. Or you could find a guyish tote bag that is big enough.
