Why my computer cannot detect "media device"?

I newly installed Windows XP Home Edition (original). The "Sound And Audio Devices" in the control panel is not empty. The audio and video tracks are playable in the players, but the sound does not function except for 'beeps' during the setting of Windows XP Home Edition. All the Device Drivers (software) were installed after the initial main installation of Windows XP Home Edition but when the turn came to install the audio device driver the message that the computer cannot detect 'media device' was displayed though as said earlier the "Sound And Audio Devices" in the control panel is not empty and audio and video tracks are playable in the players except that there is no sound.
There is no hardware malfunctioning as when I remove the current hard disc and attach another hard disc (where another Windows is installed of course) into my computer then the sound functions.
