Why Jews offended when the Tradescandia plant is called "Wandering Jew"?

The Tradescandia plant is often called The Wandering Jew. We sent one to our Jewish friend in the hospital and he never thanked us for it. Matter of fact, when we went to visit him, the plant was gone. http://www.houseplantsforyou.com/wandering-jew/

Is this offensive to Jews, and how did the name come about?
