why isn't Henry Miller considered a great American author like Steinbeck or Hemingway?

He is widely regarded as a writer of banned books and pornography, but the first 50 pages of Tropic of Capricorn, the entire book for that matter, is an exploration of life and spirit and art like none I've ever read. It's hilarious, thoughtful, grotesque and engaging and written with an energy and style that is modern. What a feat.
