Why is there such a debate about creation/evolution?

I think that it could be both, I mean it kinda ruins the Adam and Eve stuff, but couldn't God have created a cell, knowing it would grow and change into different oranisms?

OR Maybe he deliberately put fossils underground to test our faith.

Your thoughts?
I'm not actually Christian I'm just thinking.
