Why is there so much hostility at sporting events?

Why do people get so hostile and downright childish when it comes to football, basketball games, etc. Aren't there better things in life to be concerned about than taking irrational anger out on other fans and starting riots. Recently a ref and a fan (a CEO) got into a disagreement and the ref threw a ball a him. Over a game? And a CEO involved? Can anyone handle an argument in a mature manner anymore? Authority figures are getting worst at setting good examples it seems.
