On the night Lincoln went to the theater they wanted the box to appear more presidential like, so they put up the picture of Washington. If you look at the picture you will see there is a crack in the glass on it, this is where Booth hit it with his foot after he jumped from the box to the stage.
 
That was the "state box." It was reserved for the President to watch whenever he wanted.
