Why is the pontiac security system doing this?

A friend of mine has a 1999 pontiac grand am, and she had a new stereo put in by circuit city a few years ago. the grand am's have a security system that won't let the engine start if the stereo is "missing." ever since the new stereo was put in, she has trouble starting the car every once in a while, like the security system thinks the factory radio is missing, which it is... could this be a wiring issue? or something else? and is there some sort of work around for this problem?

sounds like they didn't install the correct adapter.....so pull the radio and make sure it has the correct wiring adapter.....and that all the connections are good and tight.......

why in the hell didn't she take it back the first time she had this problem????
