Why is the controversy of evolution vs creationism so strong in the USA?

I don't understand why the topic of creationism versus Darwinism is so strong in the USA and much less in other countries? I don't think it is just a dispute between believers and non believers. I'm Italian, and here there are a lot of people who believe (and the catholic church is strong) and many who don't, but the issue almost never arises. If believers, atheist or agnostic, most simply don't bother. What is it then that makes this controversy so much discussed in the US?

I think you are underestimating the effect of religion in America. The debate over evolution in America is very much a matter of religious belief. I realize it is hard to understand, Europeans in general have a more sophisticated than Americans, but religion is a very strong factor in American life.
