why is the bluetooth in my laptop not working?

i've a dell inspiron 1545. my bluetooth has stopped working in spite of the wireless switch (f2) being on. i'm unable to save the discoverability settings. i get an error message saying "unable to save, adapter is not plugged in". The bluetooth icon no longer appears in my tray but its still included in the start up options. why is this happening
