Why is the antifreeze in my '94 honda prelude bubbling over?

Ok, so my prelude is having a problem with the antifreeze bubbling over when i take the cap off. im not really sure why its doing that. ive thought it could be a blown gasket, but im not sure how to check that. also, the engine tends to overheat almost to the red line, then go back to normal, and back and forth like this. im assuming this is associated with the antifreeze problem. could it be solved by replacing the thermostat, or if its something like a blown head gasket, how can i check for that?
the bubbles were pretty big and letting quite a bit of antifreeze out. i checked the compression in the cylinders and they were equal except for one that had a good amount less compression, where i was thinking the air in the antifreeze was coming from
