The government recognizes marriage by its definition which is "the union between a man and woman before god." America was founded as a Christian nation and though we have separation of church and state, it was never intended to be a total separation. Religion affects our laws.
I say, if this is such a big issue get rid of the legal institution of marriage and let the religions decide. Then everyone is unhappy.

More or less, it's because it's not "traditional." Sure, it might have something to do with Christianity and what we were founded on, but there are plenty of non-Christian laws and thoughts in the legal system. It seems that people are so concerned with things that are out of the norm. It's a prejudice. They don't agree with it, so they try and stop it. I think it goes against everything America represents: freedom. If we are truly free, can we not marry who we please? It's stupid, and people should be allowed to marry those of the same gender if they so wish.

it's the word marriage. Marriage comes from religion, and most of those religions frown on same sex partnerships. It's an issue used to distract from other issues, as are all the other social issues.

I fully Support it myself, why shouldn't gay and lesbian couples have the right to be miserable and give up 1/2 their possessions in divorce just like us poor hetros

its a 2000+ yr history that can be traced back alll the way since founding of judaism.
according to god, marriage is between man and woman. since that idea found its way into most major religions, ppl jst think thats a "moral right"
now, before this idea, gay actions r not frowned upon, like the greeks used to have these homosexual orgies... so anyways.. yea
the gov deals with it cuz of the historical marriage laws allowing only man and woman. this country was founded on basis of christianity.. soo a lot of the relgiouse stuff found its way through the legislators and into law. even tho a lot of the marriage laws r repealed now, the lawmakers themseles r many times still quite conservative.
