Why is rape and sex discussed SO much in school lately?

In my english class (freshman) all the books we read and all the things we talk about somehow relate back to women being raped or couples having sex, etc...
Why...
 
Because more than 80 thousand people from the ages of 12-18 are sexually assaulted in the USA alone each year. Maybe it will help people cope with it.
 
1) 1 in 3 women are raped at some point in there life
2) 90% or rapes are not reported
3) 50% of reported rapes didn't happen (hell have no fury...)
4) It gets peoples attention and gets you to read
5) Liberals.....
6) It was a topic that was written about
