Before following politics I was interested mostly in science. So I was spoiled by what constituted debate by following the debate of scientists. Scientists debate with evidence, research, reasoning, data, etc. Scientists can't just make an unsubstantiated claim and expect to get away with it.

So when I took up an interest in politics I was optimistic, I was like 'ok now we can use the same techniques to discuss how to best advance society as opposed to just, say, how many light years between us and andromeda galaxy'.

BOY WAS I DISAPPOINTED

In the world of politics, facts take a back seat to ideology and personal beliefs. Evidence is not the ultimate authority, but rather just one "opinion" to be considered, or even an annoyance. Logic and reasoning is trumped by partisanship. Nobody looks out primarily for the common good, just what most furthers their own agenda. Unsubstantiated claims are the norm. The truth is basically irrelevant in politics.
Most of those involved in political debate debate on about the same level as a young earth creationist debates science.

Don’t you agree that politics should adopt a more scientific culture?
Atheist - I'm an atheist too
