Why is Palin rejecting stimulus money for education?

"The biggest single chunk of money that Palin is turning down is about $170 million for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students. Anchorage School Superintendent Carol Comeau said she is "shocked and very disappointed" that Palin would reject the schools money. She said it could be used for job preservation, teacher training, and helping kids who need it."

Apparently racking up political brownie points with the radical right is more important than the well being of her own state.

" Anchorage Democratic Rep. Les Gara argued that it's bad governing not to do things he said would improve schools and reduce the unemployment rate for two years just because it might not last forever. Gara suggested that Palin is pandering to voters outside Alaska in order to further her own national political ambitions."
Dr. Kowing - What strings?
People are rationalizing this, saying there are strings attached. What are the strings, where are you reading about them?

Are you sure it's not what she says in the article, which is just "keeping the government small"? That doesn't seem like a good rationalization to me.
phil - that's an idiotic point. Show me where it says we can have a standing army in the constitution.

Because she isnt for education..she want to keep all "her people" in Alaska and dependent on her. You betcha we can go shoot a moose today and eat all winter, who needs a stinking education???

Look at the attitude of the people. Take, take, take! You are acting as if this is free money. This money has been made up completely. It doesn't actually exist. The federal government won't give a state money for nothing--especially that kind of money. I don't know what strings are attached, but I am assuming that there are clauses in the contract of accepting such a large bill that are undesirable. I am not going to make a judgment, as I haven't read the bill yet, but it's safe to say that it isn't a gift. Besides, would that kind of money make the kids less stupid?

Palin doesn't want a portion of the money because there are strings attached that would give the Federal Government more control.

The stimulus package to the states amounts to nothing more than a power grab for the Federal Government.

The Texas Governor also rejected a portion of the money for the same reason.

People don't need to be dependent on the government especially when there is a chance for fraud or mismanagement. This is the way government becomes bigger. They will eventually own the states by default.

It's called ETHICS... something most politicians are in short supply of.

Money for the school system should NOT be in the stimulus package. That is inappropriate use of taxpayer money at this point. Politicians are trying to get their pet projects funded by putting them in the stimulus package. That's just wrong! Sorry you don't get that. The stimulus package is to rescue the economy from collapse... that and only that. Other projects like this should go through regular channels for funding.

She's all about working the political ropes to try and position herself to run for President. In her fantasy world, she thinks she has a shot at it. In any case, now she's "reconsidering" her refusal to take that money. How convenient. She grabbed what she thought was a gift laid in her lap, when Obama made the Special Olympics comment, without being smart enough to realize we would all look and see that she was refusing money for her state to help the very people she is acting self-righteous about. The longer Palin keeps herself in the public eye, the easier it is to see what an opportunistic, yet dumb as a box of rocks, snake she really is.

EDIT:
Strings attached?

Sure she doesn't like the strings are that attached. Those strings consist of having to account for where every penny goes - it's called oversight. I guess she doesn't feel she should have to be accountable to the taxpayers.

Dumping money into education does nothing but line pockets. We need serious reform in the education system.
Entrenching more bad programs is not a help but a hindrance.

Typical republican hypocrite. Just like republicans are for low taxes but they voted for a 90% tax bill on AIG.
