Greed is the nature of human being.So when the home loans became available to broader spectrum of people(read riskier payers),banks started paying huge amounts of mortgage.Then the banks started trading the rights to collect the mortgage domestically and internationally.When the broad range of risky payers defaulted to pay the whole crisis started.
It gonna take a while to stabilize the economy and lot of people will suffer.

I believe main cause is greed. Greed in government, in people who need to keep up with the "Jones" despite their income and a general 'I deserve this " attitude. I think things will get a lot worse before they begin to get better. Tighten your belts and pay off your debts, I think we are headed towards a Depression. The Recession in early '80s was tough, I think this will be much worse and the middle class will suffer the most. Good Luck & God Bless.

It has been brewing for a long time. Part of the problem is the Dems passed legislation to make loans available to folks who really could not get a normal loan. Also, the banks got greedy and gave loans to folks who were overextended themselves, thinking it would not catch up with them. I hope this bailout is not just a temporary fix!
