instead of suggesting a merger of us auto companies?...
Colleen....Chrysler is already a partner with nissan.....so maybe it is you that should get your facts straight....that request from Obama will just stir up international problems...
besides....can't you see outsourcing of jobs written all over this plan?

US companies haven't expressed an interest and are struggling to keep their own integrity and solvency intact.

It's that or they go down. Which is also an option. They aren't viable on their own, and the other U.S. auto companies have enough on their own plates without dumping Chrysler on them as well. They can always fold.

Obama isn't demanding that Chrysler merge with Fiat. The task force conclusion after reviewing Chrysler's restructuring plans and current financial situation is that Chrysler will not survive without merging with someone. Fiat just happens to be looking for a merger partner too. If there were others that would make viable merger partners then Chrysler would be free to merge with them also. In addition, Chrysler is not required to merge with anyone. They are only required to find a partner if they want more government aid. They could always go bankrupt if they choose.

It would help to get one's facts straight prior to posing a question.

Edited to add: They are partners with Nissan in some ventures but they are not merger partners and are separate corporate entities. Fiat and Chrysler are in talks to become a merged company.

Some of Fiat's cars would probably be shipped over here but there would at least still be a Chrysler if it merges with someone. Without a merger they are toast and not because Obama says so, but because they just won't survive otherwise.

Why? Have you seen the state of ANY of our Us Auto makers? How can a company in trouble add to its demise?
There are no US auto maker that has the stability nor the finances to buy out or partner with chrysler ... so they look outside where the money is and success follows.
