Why is my Vista PC stuck in 4 bit color mode?

I'm normally a tech savvy person and can fix most computer issues however I've run into one that has be scratching my head.

I pulled out an IDE DVD drive as it was dead and had two in my computer already anyways however after that, I could not get the computer to boot past BIOS as it was saying it could not find the boot disk.
I ended up swapping the two HDD boot orders and it works now.......still unsure how that got swapped though.

Now however I boot into windows and after the splash screen with the motion loading line that goes from L to R, I get a crazy set of funky 4 bit colors. I've tried getting into safe mode using the F8 key however my MB won't run into that for whatever reason. I've also got into standard mode and tried reinstalling the display drivers however that also didn't fix the issue.
It seems the motherboard RAID won't install as is the same for the SoundBlaster audio card.

I have it backed up and was going to put windows 7 on there hoping it would fix it all however I wanted to ask here first to see if anyone had any suggestions.

The computer is a custom build....
Vista 32bit
Intel Processor
Abit IC7-G motherboard
3GB memory (DDR3 I think...)
Nvidia GeForce 7800GS video card

Any suggestions?
My thought is that the video card is dieing however it's fairly new and I can't see that dieing just as I pulled out the DVD drive a day ago........
