Why is my Sony Ericsson doing this? O2?

I've had my phone less than a week and it was given to me by a friend. It was unlocked to O2 before I got it because it was previously locked to Orange which I didn't want. Apart from that, the phone was given to me brand new. boxed and undamaged. Everything's been fantastic and I really like it. This afternoon, however, my networks been playing up. At the moment its saying 'No access to network', sometimes switching to 'No network coverage'. Now, where I live the signals not particularly great but I've had no problems with it this past week. A few of my friends have the same problem but I wanted to ask if it's happened before and how long it takes to repair? I hate to say that I am dependent on my mobile and do really need it working by tomorrow :(
I can't make or receive texts/calls.
