Why is my pc playing streaming video at a faster than normal speed?

All the streaming video I am trying to watch off of any site is playing fast, so that the action is slightly sped up and the voices are really, really, high pitched. I've never encountered this before and I'm wondering what settings I would have to look at to fix this.
