Why is my modeling chocolate NOT WORKING !?

I'm trying to make modeling chocolate to decorate a cake I have to make, but every time I go to work with it, it turns to mush! It turns into about the consistency of peanut butter, just not quite as liquid-y. I really have done EVERYTHING the recipe says. Please help, and fast! (Because now I don't really have time to order pre-made, and I'd rather not use fondant! :/ )
